Temple Run 2 was released in 2013 preceding, numerous spin-offs. Now, Temple Run is making its return in the form of a competition reality show instead of a mobile game sequel.

Temple Run was a 2011 “endless-runner” mobile game that follows a dungeon explorer as they try to escape a group of monsters while collecting as much treasure as possible. The gameplay was simple to pick up but hard to master since the further you go, the more difficult the game becomes. The player can swipe one of four directions (up, down, left, and right) all of which move the character in the respective direction. Up jumps, down slides, left and right shifts the character to one of 3 adjacent lanes.

Temple Run’s television debut will be in the realm of a competition reality show. A. Smith & Co. Productions is partnering with Temple Run’s developers, Imangi Studios, to bring this show to reality. A. Smith & Co. Productions is known for American Ninja Warrior, The Titan Games, and Mental Samurai. A spin-off of Ninja Warrior, American Ninja Warrior follows a group of athletic contestants as they race through an obstacle course that measures their speed, strength, and endurance all while under a time constraint. They progress through the stages until they get to the final one, which requires them to scale a tall tower before the timer hits zero.

While it’s been years since gamers have last seen Temple Run, there’s still a chance that this show will be a viable option for viewers to be entertained. Reality television comes in all shapes and sizes. Whether it involves drama or comedy, there’s a unique spin one can put on the entertaining genre. Picturing contestants going through an obstacle course that’s reminiscent of the never-ending dungeon presented in the games might actually be a huge selling point to grab viewers.

Temple Run was a viral moment when it was released, so this will be a nice callback to the childhoods of many people. Wipeout is an obstacle course reality television show that does great numbers despite not being that serious of a show. With the production team behind American Ninja Warrior helping out, there’s an expectation that Temple Run will get a large budget.

Since it has been so long since people have last seen Temple Run, all people can do now is speculate as to how well this show will do in terms of viewers. Temple Run was a thing of the past and a viral moment, so this show runs the risk of getting the same fate. There hasn’t been much news on Temple Run since its release, so who knows if this will deliver anything worth sticking around for. Only time will tell how this dungeon racer spin-off will do, but here’s hoping that it becomes something worth people’s time or at the very least, an enjoyable weekend watch.

Temple Run will announce a distributor at a later date.
