This isn’t the first time a prop gun has been used to kill someone on a movie set.

According to a law enforcement statement supplied to CNN, actor Alec Baldwin discharged a pretend pistol on the set of the film “Rust,” killing one crew member and injuring another.

This isn’t the first time on a movie set, individuals have been killed by guns that were supposed to be innocuous.

Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee’s son, was killed by a bullet from a rifle that was meant to carry only blanks but had a round lodged in the barrel during filming the movie “The Crow” in 1993.

When fired at close range, even blanks can be lethal. On the set of “Cover Up: Golden Opportunity” in 1984, actor John-Eric Hexum was toying with a gun when he died after placing the gun to his head and firing the trigger.

“They all include a charge, a powder that makes the noise and the explosive, the visual boom, and usually it’s some kind of wire or something that explodes out of the weapon when it’s fired,” said Daniel Oates, a former Miami Beach, and Aurora, Colorado police chief. On CNN’s “New Day” on Friday, Oates added, “These weapons can be very, very destructive.”

Brandon Lee’s family sends sympathy to the family of the actor who died in a prop gun incident in 1993.

In the wake of yesterday’s event on a New Mexico film set, which claimed the life of a director of photography and injured the film’s director, Brandon Lee’s family issued a message on Twitter.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Halyna Hutchins’ family, Joel Souza, and everyone else involved in the “Rust” event. On a movie set, no one should ever be killed with a gun. “Period,” said a tweet from Brandon Bruce Lee’s verified account, which is managed by the late actor’s sister, Shannon Lee. Brandon Lee died in 1993 on the set of the film “The Crow” after an incident involving a pretend gun.
