DIG East Muquddas Haider told Dawn.com on Thursday that MNA and prominent television show host Aamir Liaquat Husain had died in Karachi.
He was 49 years old at the time. He had three wives.
Liaquat’s condition deteriorated early in the morning, according to the police officer, and he was transferred to the Aga Khan University Hospital, where he was subsequently proclaimed dead. He went on to say that preliminary results reveal no foul play, but that the politician’s post-mortem examination will take place at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
Meanwhile, after learning of the MNA’s death, National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf suspended the session, which had begun earlier today, until 5 p.m. on Friday.
Liaquat joined the PTI in March 2018 and was elected as a Member of National Assembly (MNA) from Karachi in the general elections later that year. Later, he had a falling out with the party.
He had previously served as a major leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), but left the party in August 2016, announcing his retirement from politics.
Liaquat had been in the media sector for a number of years. In 2001, he joined Geo TV as the host of Aalim Online, a religious show that drew a significant audience.
Liaquat has presented Ramazan transmissions on both Geo TV and Bol News in recent years. Bol House with Amir Liaquat was his most recent show to host.
During his time as a television host, he was involved in a number of issues. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) briefly suspended a number of his broadcasts due to hate speech. He was forbidden from appearing in the electronic media by the Islamabad High Court in 2018.
