According to Consequence, almost 200 renowned Sesame Street episodes are no longer accessible on HBO Max.
HBO Max has been losing programs as Warner Bros. Discovery purportedly tries to cut costs on residuals. Earlier this month, a number of HBO Max original shows and movies, such as Vinyl, Camping, and An American Pickle, were unceremoniously taken off the service. This week, another 36 titles exited the platform.
Now, WBD has unexpectedly removed more than 200 renowned Sesame Street episodes from HBO Max’s collection, which is a particularly heinous affront to parents of small children. In 2019, HBO Max replaced Netflix as the only source of Sesame Street programming; in addition to hosting the show’s more than a 50-year back library, the streamer also produces new episodes.
But as Tough Pigs points out, as of Friday morning, HBO Max’s Sesame Street collection was utterly empty. The original show ran for 38 seasons, but only 29 of its 250 episodes are currently available.
Also unavailable is the brief Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo, which ran for two seasons between 2020 and 2021.
WBD has previously linked the removal of HBO Max content to a considerable makeover carried out in preparation for a future merger with Discovery+. As we work to combine our content portfolios under one platform, “We will be making improvements to the content offering available on both HBO Max and discovery+.” That will necessitate the removal of some content from both platforms. However, according to Variety, these measures are actually a part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s cost-cutting plans (CEO David Zaslav promised to save $3 billion in costs upon the merger of the two companies).
